Transperth does dementia

February 10, 2008

On a peak hour Train service in Perth Australia, an elderly woman is separated from her elderly husband as the train left Perth North-bound. The elderly man suffers from dementia and was left on a busy platform helplessly. I was on that train, i heard someone screaming “please open the doors” and banging on the doors, i thought it was some idiot trying to attract attention, but the news spread over the 3 carriages quickly, and everyone felt helpless, when 1 man ran to the drivers carriage to tell the driver the situation (seen very early in the video) and when 4 people went out of their way, canceling all their plans and got off the train to help the older lady to get back to her husband at perth station. This shows that society is not shy, and what these people did was absolutely remarkable.

After a short Friday night spent in Fremantle, it was time to jump back on noisy 9.30pm service back to Perth. The trip had the usual German & French backpacker business, along with some loud Asians… but what really stood out was a 20 something year old woman who must of forgot to part with her cigarette before getting on the train at Shenton Park Stn. Although, trying her very best to hide the full-length cigarette, the carriage soon became littered with smoke from her Winny Blue. With absolutely no Trannys (Transit Guards) in sight, no more entertainment was possible. Nevertheless, hats off to this Shenton Park resident and her friend who inconspicuously stayed on the train for the whole journey, leaving the cigarette on the seat when leaving.
